Prof. Per Claesson

Prof. Per Claesson is working at the department of Chemistry, Surface Chemistry Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. His research efforts are concerned with fundamental surface chemical research in the areas of adsorption, interfacial forces and properties of adsorbed layers of proteins, surfactants and polymers. This is central information needed for understanding a range of systems like colloidal dispersions in water and oil (relevant for e.g. foods and paints), protein repellent surfaces (relevant for e.g. implants and contact lenses), foam and emulsion stability (relevant for e.g. cleaning and hygiene products), paper making, and adhesion between surfaces (relevant for e.g. composite materials). Important aims are to investigate how the chemical composition of a surface influences surface forces, and to learn how the adsorption of proteins, surfactants and polymers modify these forces. Efforts are put into understanding relations between association in bulk and at interfaces.


Prof. Magnus Johnson

Prof. Per Claesson will not be available during the COST D43 School.  Prof. Magnus Johnson will represent the department of Chemistry, Surface Chemistry Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. Prof. Johnson´s reaserach mainly concerns vibrational spectroscopy studies of interfaces, with applications in surface chemistry, bitechnology and corrosion science. An important tool in his reserach is the inherently surface sensitive laser technique "Vibrational sum frequency spectroycopy (VSFS)". Exampleas of current projects using VSFS are to obtain an undrestanding of the structure of lipid bilayers (as models for biological membranes), Langmuir-Blodgett films at different surfaces, and fatty acids absorbed at solid substrates. A great effort is also put into improving the knowledge of the water structure at various interfaces, which is og great importance in the understanding of membrane formation, adsorption phenomena of atmospheric gases at water droplets, and in protein foldings, as a few examples.

Professor Jean Daillant

Professor Jean Daillant is director of the CEA Saclay DRECAM. His research covers a broad range of interfacial phenomena with a focus on ion specific effects. He is also an expert on sophisticated scattering techniques that are pushed to new limits to learn more about interfacial architecture.


Dr. Victoria Dutschk is a staff scientist at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden. Research activities are focused on a mechanistic understanding of manifold interfacial phenomena involving surface active agents. The main research field ‘Interfacial Engineering’ is related to fundamental material  research having strong links with industry covering adhesion phenomena, surface topography and roughness analysis, Wetting and interfacial dynamics and spreading of aqueous surfactant solutions.

Prof. Andreas Fery

Prof. Andreas Fery is working at the University of Bayreuth. His research aims for a tailoring Interfacial Properties and an understanding for polyelectrolyte (Multilayer) coatings, membranes and capsules.

Dr. Thomas Gutberlet 

Dr. Thomas Gutberlet is a senior research scientist at the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) at the german neutron facility FRM-II at Munich-Garching. Before joining JCNS he has been responsible for the neutron reflectometer AMOR at the swiss neutron source SINQ at Paul Scherrer Institut, a dedicated instrument to any interested scientist who needs neutrons at interfaces in his research. His scientific interests are centered around the investigation of biological model membrane systems by scattering and diffraction methods and the adsorption of biomolecules at interfaces. Questions as the phase transitions in phospholipid systems, hydration of lipid bilayers, interaction of peptides and proteins with membranes and interfaces and adsorption and self-assembly of phospholipids at various interfaces are investigated using neutron reflectometry, small angle neutron scattering and diffraction.

Prof. Jönsson

Professor Bo Jönsson is working at the department of Theoretical Chemistry of the University of Lund, Sweden. His research interests are intermolecular forces, electrostatic double layers and colloidal systems such as polyelectrolytes, cement and proteins.

Dr. Ger J. M. Koper

Dr. Ger J. M. Koper is associate professor at DelftChemTech, the chemical engineering department of the Delft University of Technology. He is guest researcher at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry of the Leiden University. His research field is Colloid and Interface Science with emphasis on Aggregation and Adsorption Phenomena. His experimental expertise is in optical ellipsometry and reflectometry, dielectric spectroscopy and electro-optical birefringence

Prof. P. Kralchevsky

Prof. Peter Kralchevsky is working at the Faculty of Chemistry of University of Sofia, 1126 Sofia, BULGARIA. His research interests  cover a broad range of interfacial phenomena with a special focus on thin liquid films fluid interfaces, capillary phenomena,  phospholipid membranes, attachment of particles to interfaces, Interactions in colloidal and bio-colloidal dispersions.

Prof. Abraham Marmur

Prof. Abraham Marmur is working at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel. His research interest cover a broad range of interfacial and colloidal phenomena, in particular wetting, adhesion and capillarity , contact angle theory and measurement, ultra-hydrophobic Surfaces, spreading on surfaces: relationship between adhesion and wetting, capillary penetration into porous media, wetting of powders.

Prof. Helmuth Möhwald

Prof. Helmuth Möhwald is heading the interface department of the Max-Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Golm. His research is focussed on structural investigations of monolayers, polyectrolyte multilayers and capsules, and quite recently entering the field of ultrasonic chemistry.

Dr. Hubert Motschmann

Prof. Hubert Motschmann is working at the Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry of the University of Regensburg. A major focus in the work of his group is understanding the structure and the self-organization of molecules at interfaces and the impact of interfaces on bulk properties of adjacent phases. This knowledge is utilized for the design of novel structures with specific function. His experimental expertise are linear and nonlinear optical techniques.

Dr. Georg Papastavrou

Dr. Georg Papastavrou is lecturer at the University of Geneva. His research focuses on the interaction forces between colloidal surfaces. The main interest is to understand how these interaction forces depend on adsorption of polyelectrolytes, defined surface modifications or external electrochemical control. Atomic Force Microscopy, either for imaging or for direct force measurements, is one of the major tools in his research.

Dr. B.N.J. Persson

Dr. B.N.J. Persson is a staff scientist at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, D-52425 Jülich, He is a theoretician and his work is presently focussed on  adhesion, rubber friction and crack propagation in rubber.


Dr. Frank Simon is a staff scientist at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden. His research interest are surface chemistry of polymers and metal oxides, surface modification and functionalization of polymers by wet chemical methods and physico-chemical treatments, hybrid materials made from polymers and inorganic metal oxide particles. He is using a broad range of surface analytical techniques including Surface spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrokinetic investigations of solid surfaces.

Prof. Adrian Rennie 

Prof. Adrian Rennie is co-chair of Materials Physics at Uppsala University, Sweden where he leads a research group working on Soft Matter and Interfaces. He graduated with a doctorate from the University of Cambridge, UK and has worked in Germany, France, Sweden and the UK in a variety of positions including director of the Studsvik Neutron Research Laboratory. His work has involved extensive use of reflection techniques to study interfaces. Recent studies involve surfactants, insoluble monolayers and polymers at liquid and solid interfaces. 

Prof. Mugele

Prof. Mugele’s obtained his PhD in 1997 from the University of Konstanz (Germany) and his habilitation from the University of Ulm in 2003. Since 2004, he is the chair of the Physics of Complex Fluids at the University of Twente. His current research interests are concentrated in the areas of (i) nanofluidics and confinement effects, (ii) (electro-)wetting and microfluidics, (iii) rheology of complex fluids. Prof. Mugele is the author of >60 research papers in refereed journals, including the most cited review article in electrowetting. Prof. v. Klitzing Prof. Regine v. Klitzingis working at the Technical Universtiy of Berlin at the Stranki-Laboratorium for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry. Her research focuses on interfaces and thin films with respect to the control of interfacial processes by macromolecules. Especially, she is interested in controlling surface properties by functionalization of surfaces, tuning the stability of thin liquid films (like in foams and colloidal suspensions) and  the effect of geometrical confinement in thin films on the structure and dynamics of colloidal dispersions.
