In 1913 Yakov Perelman noticed in his book "Physics can be fun": "Studies of surface tension of gentle soap bubbles help to recognise laws of forces between small particles - those forces, lacking which nothing would exist in the world apart from finest dust". In general, bodies interact with each other and with their surroundings. As this take place, the interface serves as a "stage" where all interactions are "enacted" between the surfaces. The energy cost involved in the increase in surface area manifests itself in five specific ways. Each of these ways can be manipulated specifically and offers the possibility to control the process at hand. For a plethora of technological processes such as flotation, washing, sticking of various materials, knowledge of surface forces and their laws is of crucial importance.

Unfortunately, presentations at interfacial conferences provide at most overviews of applications of scientific methods, but do not allow a meaningful in-depth discussion of the particular experimental and theoretical background.

This School is designed for motivated PhD students and Post-docs in the field of Colloid and Interface Science.  Our idea is to give courses that would deal with colloidal phenomena, their description as well as modern measuring methods, giving a good perspective on technological applications. The teaching goal of the School Interfacial Engineering in Nanotechnology is set at a decent level: after studying, the students should be able to critically assess relevant scientific literature. The information is then discussed and deepened in small workgroups. The Interaction and active discussion of participants is a crucial element of our School.
